The Project

Colorado’s ranches are places where legends live and embody what is true about America. Independent and determined, ranchers are humble stewards of the land that is vital to all who live in Colorado.

The hay meadows, the big skies, lonely barbed wire fences and the weathered barns are as much a part of the Colorado landscape as the wild, craggy peaks of the high country.

In Ranches of Colorado, photographer John Fielder captures these ranch landscapes in every corner of the Colorado - the eastern plains, high mountain valleys, and west slope river canyons.

Preserving these extraordinary landscapes is the goal of Colorado’s land conservation community. Working with landowners, more than 2 million acres have been preserved for future generations. By showcasing the beauty of Colorado ranches on film, photographer John Fielder hopes to accelerate the rate at which ranches are preserved.

Protecting Colorado’s ranches is about more than a way of life and an industry that has made Colorado great. Preserving ranches means preserving scenic viewsheds along rural highways and byways. Ranches are habitat in winter for migratory animals like elk and deer, and Colorado’s rivers, creeks, and watersheds depend upon ranches and ranchers to keep them free-flowing and clear.

The Colorado ranch is an integral component of Colorado’s future – one that our children’s children will continue to enjoy.

Ranches of Colorado Photography Exhibit

October 2009 – March 2010: The exhibition, at John Fielder’s Colorado gallery in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, will display fifty large scale fine art photographs from Ranches of Colorado. Various community and sponsor events to celebrate the project will be held during the six-month exhibition.

October 2009 – December 2010: John Fielder will present the Ranches of Colorado slide show at fifty venues throughout Colorado to promote the book and project. John will entertain audiences with stories of how he captured the perfect photograph and the adventures he had along the way.

Ranches of Colorado Partnership

The land trust community facilitates ranch protection with conservation easements by working in partnership with Colorado ranch families. Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust, Colorado Open Lands and the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts are the non-profit sector partners of this exciting project.

A portion of Ranches of Colorado proceeds will be given to these organizations to continue the important work of preserving ranchland open space in Colorado.

The Ranches of Colorado book will be available beginning of October 2009 at retailers across Colorado and online.

John Fielder is photographing 50 working Colorado ranches representing every region and ecosystem in Colorado, most of which have been protected with conservation easements or are in the ownership of conservation-minded ranch families. The large format book will contain 200 photographs and 230 pages.

Journalist James Meadow, of the Rocky Mountain News, interviewed ranchers and wrote a dozen essays recounting the history of the ranch families and their relationship with the land.

KUSA(9NEWS) is the Ranches of Colorado media partner. Using HD film of Colorado ranches, 9NEWS will provide promotion for the project on the news, through leveraged advertising (2:1), and in feature stories. Promotional pieces will also be aired on channels 9 and 20, 9NEWS.com, and Weather Plus. In addition, the Ranches of Colorado project will be featured at the 9NEWS booth at the National Western Stock Show in January 2010.
