GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A vision of safer, more convenient trails is closer to becoming a reality thanks to a large grant and community support.

It's a tale of Three Sisters, a 130 acre property named for the number of rolling hills just off Tabeguache Trail.

Once destined to be a site for 130 homes, is now on a much different path. The vision, to create a more family friendly park fit with educational signs and trails for hiking an biking.

"The terrain is more gentle than the Tabeguache trail system," says Three Sisters Project Coordinator, Libby Collins.

In an effort to acquire the land non-profit Mesa Land Trust recruited active community members like runner and mom of two Kim Williams.

"I have a third grader and a first grader, both mountain bikers. This is our gym membership that's why it was easy to get behind."

"Were hoping that in the future that it will be connected to the Riverfront Trail and that kids could just ride their bikes to it,"says Collins.

This week the $1.6 million project moved one giant step closer to becoming a reality thanks to a $675,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado.

"It really provides us with a chance to enhance what is already a wonderful attribute and make it even better," says Rob Bleiberg with Mesa Land Trust.

The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Association has partnered with Mesa Land trust to fund this effort.

Right now they are 200,000 dollars away from purchasing the Three Sisters Property.

Land Trust plans to place a conservation easement on the property that will forever preserve it for public use, and deed the property over to the City of Grand Junction.

If everything goes as planned the project is expected to be completed by the spring of 2012.
