Senator Allard Questions the IRS on Colorado Audits

Senator Wayne Allard questioned the Director of the IRS on Wednesday April 16, 2008 during the Appropriations Sub-committee on Financial Services and General Government. The audio of this hearing is no longer available online.


Summary of information gathered from the hearing:
  1. The IRS has made 170 settlement offers in Colorado.
  2. 20-25 more settlement offers will go out in the next two weeks (as of 4/16/08).
  3. The employees responsible for auditing conservation easements have asked the IRS for more resources.
  4. The Director has authorized more resources and the addition of appraisers to the group responsible for conservation easement audits.
  5. The IRS has focused its efforts on audits where the sole issue was valuation and is waiting for these cases to be concluded before investigating the more complicated cases.
  6. The IRS committed to meeting with Senators Allard and Salazar and working with them to expedite the audit process.
  7. Senator Allard asked the IRS to follow Colorado's lead by focusing its investigation on transactions that involve people disciplined or under investigation by the state of Colorado and to release the deals involving government agencies and GOCO.
